Barbara Bernstein's blend of academic credentials and dance expertise makes her uniquely suited to directing a program on team building through dance. She received her Ph.D. in Human Development from the University of Maryland's College of Education. Formerly a college teacher, Bernstein now teaches Salsa and Rueda dancing.
Barbara's dance background includes training in foreign folk dance, all the ballroom dances (Latin and smooth) as well as Salsa and Casino Rueda. She directs DanceInTime (URL: DanceInTime.com) which promotes Casino Rueda through classes and performances. In addition to her regular classes at dance studios in the Washington D.C/Baltimore. area, Bernstein has taught at clubs, schools, athletic facilities, work-places, etc. Dance programs have been run at a variety of work-places including various divisions of the Army, Walter Reed Medical Center, the Maryland Health Department, the Census Bureau, General Accounting Office, as well as private firms and schools from elementary to college level.
In addition, Bernstein has arranged Latin dance shows for venues as varied as The Kennedy Center, the Verizon Center, and countless festivals and stages, large and small..
She also produced a CD titled "Rhythm Reminder" (see below) to help students with their timing. This CD is a great tool for teaching and learning. Bernstein writes articles on dance topics for websites and electronic publications such as Salsaweb.com, SalsaFreak.com, and Candela magazine as well as for printed magazines such as Sabor.
For her efforts, Bernstein has received the D.C. area's "Tribute To Women in Salsa" Award for "Outstanding Dedication to the Promotion of a Vibrant Salsa Community," and she was chosen to judge the
"World Salsa/Rueda Championship Contest" at
the 2004 and the 2005 Salsa Rueda Congress in Miami. She also judged a Rueda competition and taught in a "Mega-class" at the Salsa Rueda Competition in Vancouver, Canada (April, 2005). In addition, at an "International Dance Productions"-sponsored event, Bernstein taught Casino Rueda workshops, judged a Salsa competition, and did a Rueda presentation for the Saturday night Gala (10/2005 and 10/2006). And at the first two annual International Salsa Rueda Congresses in Miami (04 and 05), she was honored to judge the Amateur Salsa & Rueda Competitions.
In August 2007, her Dance Company's "Women's Team" performed and Bernstein taught a workshop at the Miami Salsa Congress, which draws dancers from all over the world! They are performing there again in 2010. A DanceInTimeTeam also performed in August 2008 and September 2009 at the New York Salsa Congress, in July 2008 in Puerto Rico, in June/July 2008 and 2009 at the Philadelphia Salsa Congress, and in the 2006, 2007, and 2009 DC Salsa Congresses.
